5. Hate Groups and Antigovernment Groups on Rise across US

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which monitors hate groups and antigovernment groups, released a report showing that 1,360 radical, antigovernment “patriot” groups and 321 militias actively operate within the United States. Released in March 2013, these statistics show an 813 percent rise in the number of such groups since 2008, with increasing numbers each year. Hate groups are most prevalent in California, with eighty-four total; Texas was second among states with sixty-two.

The SPLC counted over 1,000 hate groups in the US in 2012. By the SPLC’s standards, hate groups “have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics,” and their activities can include “criminal acts, marches, rallies, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing.”

With the numbers of Patriot groups now much higher now than they were during the peak of the militia movement in the 1990s, the threat of domestic terror attacks is very real. After the SPLC’s report was released, the Center’s president, Richard Cohen, sent a letter to the US attorney general as well as the Homeland Security secretary requesting them to “create a new task force to ensure the government is devoting the resources needed to address domestic terrorism.”

Hate groups are now transitioning from racist hatred to hatred focused on the government and its representatives. The patriot and militia groups are some of the fastest growing groups, and their goals and rhetoric must be understood in order to implement successful strategies to counter their behavior if it should become violent, according to the SPLC. The SPLC also identified “sovereign citizens,” who often operate as “lone wolves,” breaking away from the group to perform the violent acts. Unfortunately, with the use of social media and the Internet, hate groups are able to recruit and spread their beliefs more readily than in the past.

Corporate media have paid scattered attention to the SPLC report and its findings. Both the New York Times and MSNBC covered the report on the day the SPLC issued it, but otherwise, establishment media have done little to shed light on this subject.

VERY disappointed that this would make your list.

  • Mustard Seed October 3, 2013

Why are hate groups and patriot movements being conflated in this article? If you wanted to be as cynical as the SPLC, you could say that “hatred focused on the government and its representatives” could also describe the Occupy movement.

Occupy and Patriot movements ought to get together. They have more in common than they think.

Worst article ever. Project censored is a fraud and loses all credibility. It’s sheer stupidity also hurts global reasearch.

    • Steve November 3, 2013

You hit it on the head Jesus! These stories are not “censored.” They were all over CNN and other major news networks as well as magazines. I watch the news all the time. The whole focus of Project Censored is for the people in charge to dig up stories that support their anti government/anti corporate/pro cuba views. It may as well be the Havana News Network the way they spin the stories so far to the left.

How odd this article panders to the very front organization (SPLC) that represents and protects the elites and media this group (Project Censored) is supposed to be exposing! LOL! Should’ve known when their new documentary was pushing people like Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky as credible sources of reliable information. This is nothing but fake, leftist propaganda media, pretending to be real journalism… What a joke and a total hoax! Wouldn’t surprise me at all if this turned out to be nothing more than another controlled opposition operation.

You might want to investigate this Group before using them as any sort of “reliable source”. They are a propaganda Organization, and do not represent the truth, in any form.

Lol that’s hilarious. Someone should really look at who funds and supports this group. I suspect Phillips is on the Castro family payroll.

i am a former ranger in tha army and i am mad as hell as i see the direction our country is going . I am more than willing to take up arms to save this country

  • Paul Meyer January 10, 2014

Unfortunate you use SPLC as a primary source and guide; although it may track some extremist groups, it also identifies anti-Zionists and Palestinians opposed the Israel’s policies as “dangerous” and suspect. I once contributed to the agency, but on numerous occasions found that what they describe as “hate groups” are in fact people opposed to injustice.

  • Dave January 26, 2014

You are obviously helping to perpetrate the stereotype of the “gun toting God fearing white racist! You did not mention the “Knock-Out Game” where young Blacks EXCLUSIVLY are savagely assaulting whites and Asians and Hispanics with the majority of victims being elderly and female! Racism occurs in all races! SHAME ON YOU!

You forgot to add border patrol to your list, thwyre super anti immigrant right? and all the rappers that say anti white shit all the time didn’t make it. Also websites that expose the truth about islam aren’t comparable to neonazis, thwres nothing wrong with hating an ideology that calls for violence against EVERYONE but themselves. How come they didn’t make it to Tue list? What about the Muslims in san Diego that piloted the 911 attacks, smuggled enough anthrax to kill a half a million people, or have been caught numerous times at our ports smuggling nuclear materials to build a dirty bomb. They don’t make it to the list but proud law abiding Americans and legal constitutional militias are the hate groups? This list is a JOKE

The SPLC is one of your featured stories that has been censored? ARE YOU SERIOUS?

The SPLC is well-known for being a hate-group themselves.

So much for credibility of this group….

  • Cathleen McGuire May 8, 2014

Love all your work, but you obviously didn’t get the memo when it comes to SPLC. I highly recommend you listen to this report on what Morris Dees and the SPLC really are about.

My Credit Score varies from just above POOR to just above GOOD, but not good enough to rent a car from Avis or other rental companies even with $2000 cash in my pocket and buying all the extra insurance offered. To make matters worse I cannot get a fair paying job because my credit score isn’t GREAT, so no job and I can’t improve my standing, yet the Government will give me a loan for my Masters and put me deeper indebt. Obama came out of the closet and said he is a Muslim, but I think he is really a terrorist behind opening the doorways for foreigners to come in a destroy freedom and the American lifestyle. Lets take back the Government for all soil born Americans and put the political leaders where they belong, IN JAIL. I have two finger I am holding high for the Americans leading us into the gutters and they are say America is number 1, but F*ck You! Bring all our troops home and jobs back today or tomorrow maybe our scariest nightmare.
