5. Private Prison Companies Fund Anti–Immigrant Legislation

Over the past four years roughly a million immigrants have been incarcerated in dangerous detention facilities in our taxpayer-financed private prison system where children were abused, women were raped and men died from lack of basic medical attention.  Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer received substantial campaign financing from Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and GEO Group, the nation’s two largest companies that design, build, finance and operate prisons.
CCA, based in Nashville, TN, and Geo Group, a global corporation based in Boca Raton, FL, are the principal moving forces in the behind-the-scenes organization of the current wave of anti-immigrant legislative efforts.

Both CCA and GEO which rely almost exclusively on revenue from tax dollars at local state, and federal levels, profited from the incarceration of immigrants apprehended by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
CCA’s top management in Tennessee contributed the largest block of out-of-state campaign contributions received by Governor Brewer.  Brewer employs as aides two former CCA lobbyists, who assisted signing SB 1070 into law on April 23rd.  CCA, which already has several detention facilities in Arizona and is hoping to expand its immigrant business in that state, is expected to show a huge increase in revenues when SB 1070 is implemented.

          • Kansan December 30, 2011

            Spare us the bollocks!

            Give up the fake pathos.

No one brought “them here.”  They came out of desperation because they couldn’t otherwise feed their famlies thanks in no small part to ignorant U.S. trade policies.

          • Terrianda2 December 30, 2011

first of all you are correct the trade policies did being them here , shame on Mexico for participating but Mexico gets over 80 million dollars back in remittances every year from ” HER PEOPLE” thats ore than their  GNP in oil . so the U.S. doesnt gain from it MEXICO DOES.

          • Kansan December 30, 2011

Actually, the general population of each country doesn’t gain from NAFTA: The richest 1% in both countries do.

There’s no such thing as a “GNP in oil.”

By writing in all caps, you make it clear that you’re a nitwit.

          • Terrianda2 December 30, 2011

hey moron , they do have a GNP and my statement was the remittances were larger than their GNP which included their oil revnue. and your right neither countries people gain from the trade agreements

          • Terrianda2 December 30, 2011

well moron its been fun , but gotta move on, Your a bit boring with all your trivial bullshit. Have a good day and support half the third worlds poor so they can mow your lawn.

          • Kansan December 31, 2011

You are clearly a complete idiot.

The Mexican annual GNP is $1.63 trillion.

The oil producti0n is $110 billion.

The remittances have fallen as rapidly as oil production and are under $20 billion a year.

Do you need some help understanding those numbers?  A bright nine-year-old should be able to help you sort through them.

      • Terrianda2 December 30, 2011

        you are such an example

Maybe you could get some 12-year-old to help you.  Do you have any grandchildren who would volunteer?

    • Owen December 6, 2011

I am sure those jobs going to immigrants are keeping your kids in the unemployment line.  Your starving family members are waiting for an opening as migrant fruitpickers, dishwasher at the all-night diner or sewage treatment plant muckers, right?  Those dastardly foreigners are raking YOUR shit!

      • Terrianda2 December 8, 2011

are ya kidding me owen ? who do you think raked that sh-t before an illegal did it ? who do you think picked the produce before they did it ? we did it my kids did it that is how I got my clothes for school . get real will ya !

P.S.  I picked berries for a farmer back in the ’40s.

          • Kansan December 31, 2011

Five hours, and you can’t tell us where you picked that fruit or harvested those vegetables?

Picking an apple off a tree in your grandma’s back yard doesn’t count.

All that is now California, Nevada, and Texas was Mexican property. You are obviously a Nigger ( stupid, arrogant, and ignorant) By the way Mexicans don’t take Americans jobs the earn them, I’m sure if you work hard your ethnicity isn’t a factor regardless your position. Take your bullshit sob story elsewhere. White people have never had to do ” the dirty work” because they have always oppressed other races.

Owen when you get over your self and research then join in the discussion cause right now you in way over your head.

      • ibetheman May 21, 2012

Actually in the border states, the illegals work in the building trades, (Home Construction). They have taken over the job market, and working for $10.00 @ hour. This has caused many Americans to lose there jobs! Go to any new trac home subdivision, being built, and see for yourself, 99% of the work force are illegal aliens!

        • Gforce23 September 10, 2012

There are many companies, especially the big agribusinesses, that have setup their own bus companies to bus in immigrants from Mexico, pay them low wages, and then give them shitty housing. They work in hand with the local police, ratting our their own immigrants, and constantly resupplying themselves with new immigrants. The illegal immigrants have no rights and therefore are screwed. Hard to blame someone who works hard to try and survive and support their families.

Abandonment of border control would be disastrous for the US, most of all for the poor, and would do nothing to the hundreds of millions of others in the Third World who could never hope to immigrate to the US.

A very simple solution would be to process all applications for asylum in the country from which the would-be immigrant wished to migrate. In place of detention centers within the US, accommodation for intending immigrants could be set up outside the US embassy or outside some other office administered by the embassy.

With the agreement of the host country, protection could be provided by the US embassy staff to any intending asylum seeker until such time as either he/she is found to have grounds to fear for his/her safety in that country and is granted asylum or is found not to have grounds for fear and refused asylum.

Refugee rights advocates could ensure that every intending asylum seeker is given a fair hearing.

Patrick you do realize that not every person that sneaks into this country is a refugee dont you ? and nor should they be , refugee status was originated for people fleeing from war and were in fear of their lives becasue of religious , or political beliefs and only in the last century did we include ” economic ” which is rediculous since we all need a job . this lack of immigration enforcement is designed for ‘MIGRATIONAL CONTROL under agenda 21 , it has nothing to do with helping other people. its for coroprations cheap labor , keeps all wages down even ceasar chavez knew that , that is why he deplored illegal immigration it kept him from getting a “farm wrokers union together for years ” as long as there was cheap labor he couldnt get a decent wage for his fram workers , and by the way Partick MEXICANS , AND NOT ALL SOUTH AMERICANS ARE NOT QUALIFIED UNDER REFUGEE STATUS CAUSE THEY ARE REFUGEES .

Thanks for your thoughtful response, Terrianda2, to a post that many, who label themselves humanitarian, would consider heretical and heartless.

Another practice, which also has been deceptively presented as assisting the world’s poor, is outsourcing work from first world countries.  In fact this is, at best, of only marginal benefit to those who obtain work in the sweatshops  to which the work is outsourced, whilst the rest of the community suffer from rent increases from landlords and price increases from vendors.  (Unfortuntely, I have mislaid the bookmark to the article.  I will provide it as soon as I find it again.)
