Citizens Protect the Rivers

Elizabeth Grossman reports that a group of New York/New Jersey citizens used determination and a Roman Empire legal principle to win public beach access rights. This article can be found at Elizabeth Grossman. “River Rescue: Citizen Riverkeepers Protect Their Waters.”

Elizabeth describes the public trust doctrine that has been translated from Latin. “ By the law of nature, these things are common to mankind: the air, running water, the sea, and consequently the shores of the sea.” This notion supports the values of a shared common heritage by asserting that water cannot be deemed private property.

The Alfred and Dorothy Andersen Award for the Fair Sharing of the Common Heritage recognizes Elizabeth Grossman’s work as an inspiration to all.
