Czech activists demanded the government of Mirek Topolanek halt the parliamentary ratification of a US missile-tracking high-speed radar base in the Brdy military district southwest of Prague. Military police ended the six-week occupation of Height 718 by activists representing Greenpeace and the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia which conducted mass protests and rolling hunger strikes that culminated in the biggest anti-base demonstration to date, attended by 2000 people. President Vaclav Klaus rejected a call from two prominent activists who ended a three-week hunger strike to discuss the issue. He condemned the hunger strikes, saying that they had no place in a modern democracy. An opinion poll by Prague’s CVVM agency found that 66% of Czechs oppose the base.
