Establishment Media Downplay Democrats’ Farrakhan Scandal

Eight Democrats have met with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, an anti-Semite and racist, according to a March, 2018 report for the Daily Caller by Peter Hasson. Despite Farrakhan’s anti-Semite and phobic views—he frequently describes Jews as “satanic” and has said that white people “deserve to die”—leading Democrats maintain relationships with him, Hasson and other conservative journalists reported. As Hasson reported, four of these Democratic Party leaders have declined to denounce Farrakhan’s hateful views.  Hasson wrote that CNN and other establishment media have downplayed or refused to cover these Democrats’ relationships with Farrakhan. According to Hasson, Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, has “misled the public for years about his relationship with Farrakhan.” Another Democrat, Illinois Rep. Danny Davis, stated that Farrakhan was an “outstanding human being,” and admitted having a relationship with him. Tamika Mallory, the co-president of Women’s March, also supports Farrakhan.

As the editors of the Weekly Standard noted in a March, 2018 editorial on the topic,  in 1984, Farrakhan described Adolf Hitler as a “very great man.”

The Daily Caller declared that while establishment news sources are touching on the story, they have not addressed new, specific evidence of connections between Democratic Party leaders and Farrakhan. The Washington Post covered Rep. Keith Ellison’s connections to Farrakhan in March, 2018. An update to Hasson’s article noted that, “Four days after this article was published, CNN host John Berman asked New York Rep. Gregory Meeks about his Farrakhan ties.”
