University Book Store

4326 University Way NE, Seattle, Washington 98105

Since 1976, Project Censored has documented “the news that didn’t make the news,” exposing and opposing news censorship, while promoting independent journalism and critical media literacy.

“Censored 2020: Through the Looking Glass” examines the most important but under-reported news stories of 2018-2019. These include the way survivors of sexual abuse are frequently criminalized for acts of self-defense, the Department of Justice’s surveillance of journalists using secret rules that undermine the First Amendment, and grassroots efforts to make school lunch programs more equitable. These stories and more like them expose the corporate news media’s systemic blind spots while highlighting the crucial role of independent journalists in providing the kind of news necessary for a vibrant democracy.

In a time of imaginary threats trumping vital civic needs, Project Censored presents a clear-eyed alternative to the looking-glass logic of contemporary politics and news reporting in the United States, holding the corporate media to account for its skewed storytelling, complicity in abuses of power, and outright censorship.
