About This Video Series

The Decoding Democracy video series features a collection of noted media scholars, journalists, and activists joined Project Censored to discuss the importance of critical media literacy education, independent journalism, and civic engagement during an election year. This collection of interviews highlights how an informed public can safeguard democracy from corporate interests, social media algorithmic manipulation, establishment press distractions, and various forms of censorship and work to build a more just and inclusive society. Through these conversations we aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools required to meaningfully navigate today’s complex media landscape and hyper-partisan political climate to become more well-informed and engaged citizens.

We would like to give a special thanks to the Steering Committee of the Union for Democratic Communications (UDC); and the hosts of their conference “Left Undone,” the Media, Inequality, and Change (MIC) Center, a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication and Rutgers University’s School of Communication and Information; and the Project Censored team for making this series possible. Most of these recordings took place during the UDC conference at Penn between October 12-15, 2023 (unless otherwise indicated).

Please note that this video series is meant for educational purposes. Many of the interviewees gave detailed responses, but for the purposes of this video compilation, these were edited for concision, cohesiveness, and to better conform for an educational environment. These videos along with the complete interviews are available to view on the official Project Censored YouTube page.
