“AquAdvantage” salmon, a genetically modified (GM) salmon altered to secrete growth hormone year round resulting in twice the size of a normal salmon, have tested positive for infectious salmon anemia (ISA) according to the Cohen Commission of Canada. ISA, a viral disease that causes severe anemia in fish, has been reported to have a devastating effect on fish farms worldwide, and has been detected in wild sockeye salmon. The Cohen Commission reports that Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans officially alerted the Canadian Food Inspection Agency regarding ISA contamination of AquaBounty’s AquAdvantage salmon at an inland facility on Prince Edward Island in 2009. GM salmon may pose significant health risks if consumed since no independent research has been conducted. The detection of ISA furthers the concern about the farming practices of AquaBounty who is pushing to bring AquAdvantage salmon to US supermarkets. Most importantly, ISA could have a disastrous impact on wildlife worldwide, as it has now escaped to the wild.
